Most founders spend hours creating content and only minutes designing their LinkedIn banner

Whenever I audit a founder’s LinkedIn profile, I notice the same pattern.

They’ve invested time writing posts, polishing their experience, updating their headline, and even optimizing their profile picture. But then I look at the banner, and it feels like an afterthought. Sometimes it’s a stock photo of a city skyline. Sometimes it’s a random gradient. Sometimes it’s completely blank.

The problem is that your LinkedIn banner is one of the first things people see when they visit your profile. Before they read your About section or scroll through your experience, their brain has already started making assumptions about you. First impressions happen incredibly fast, and your banner plays a much bigger role than most founders realize.

Your banner has one job: explain who you are in three seconds

I always tell founders to imagine their LinkedIn banner as a billboard on a busy highway.

Nobody stops the car to read a paragraph.

People glance.

They scan.

They decide.

If someone lands on your profile, they should immediately understand three things: who you help, what problem you solve, and why they should trust you. If your banner doesn’t communicate that almost instantly, you’ve already lost an opportunity.

One mistake I see all the time is founders trying to fit too much information into the design. They list every service, every certification, every achievement, and every social media platform. Instead of creating clarity, they create confusion.

The strongest banners are surprisingly simple because simplicity is memorable.

Think like your ideal client

One exercise I often recommend is opening your LinkedIn profile and pretending you’ve never seen it before.

Ask yourself one simple question:

“If I landed here for the first time, would I immediately understand what this person does?”

Not after reading the About section.

Not after scrolling through ten posts.

Just by looking at the banner.

If the answer is no, then your banner isn’t doing its job.

Your ideal client shouldn’t have to solve a puzzle to understand your business. The clearer your positioning is, the easier it becomes for people to remember you.

Your banner should build trust, not just look beautiful

Design matters, but strategy matters more.

I’ve seen founders spend hundreds of euros on visually impressive banners that still fail because they don’t communicate anything meaningful.

A beautiful banner without a clear message is like a beautifully designed website with no navigation. It may look impressive, but it doesn’t help people move forward.

Instead of asking, “Does this banner look professional?” ask yourself, “Does this banner build trust?”

That small shift changes everything.

Trust can come from a clear value proposition, recognizable clients, years of experience, media appearances, speaking engagements, or a simple message that tells visitors exactly why they should continue exploring your profile.

Your banner is part of your personal brand

One thing I think founders often underestimate is how connected every part of their LinkedIn profile really is.

Your banner isn’t separate from your personal brand.

It reinforces it.

If your content talks about leadership, your banner should support that positioning. If you work with startup founders, your banner should immediately make startup founders feel like they’re in the right place.

Every visual element should tell the same story.

That’s how strong brands are built.

Not through individual pieces of content, but through consistency.

Don’t make people guess

One of my biggest rules in personal branding is simple:

Never make your audience do unnecessary work.

The moment people have to guess who you help, what you do, or whether you’re relevant to them, you’ve created friction.

And friction is the enemy of conversions.

People don’t spend several minutes analyzing LinkedIn profiles. They scan them. Their brain fills in the blanks almost instantly.

That’s why clarity almost always outperforms creativity.

Learn how to optimize your LinkedIn banner

I recently created a YouTube video where I break down exactly how I approach LinkedIn banners, the common mistakes I see founders making, and the small changes that can completely transform the first impression your profile creates.

If you’re wondering whether your current banner would pass the three-second test, I’d highly recommend watching it before making your next update. Sometimes one strategic change can make a much bigger difference than posting more content.

Our YouTube channel is where I regularly share practical LinkedIn strategies, personal branding insights, and founder-focused advice that goes far beyond quick social media tips. If you’re serious about growing your reputation online, it’s a great place to keep learning.

Your LinkedIn banner is working, whether you designed it intentionally or not

At the end of the day, every LinkedIn profile already tells a story.

The question is whether it’s telling the story you want people to hear.

Your banner is one of the first signals people receive about your expertise, your positioning, and your professionalism. It has the power to encourage someone to keep exploring your profile or to leave before they’ve even read your headline.

That’s why I believe founders should stop treating their banner as decoration and start treating it as a business asset.

And if you want to build a LinkedIn profile that attracts opportunities instead of simply existing online, that’s exactly what we focus on inside the Private Founders Community. We help founders create personal brands that build trust from the very first impression, because in business, those first few seconds often matter more than people think.
