Your first impression now happens online

When I meet someone at a conference, an event, or even through a simple introduction, there is a very high chance that one of the first things they will do afterward is search for me on LinkedIn. The same thing happens before a potential client books a call, before an investor agrees to a meeting, or before someone decides whether they want to collaborate with you.

This is why I increasingly think of your LinkedIn profile as your new business card. A traditional business card gives someone your name, role, and contact details, but your LinkedIn profile can tell the complete story of who you are, what you know, who you help, and why people should trust you.

The difference is that a business card gets handed to someone once. Your LinkedIn profile can be discovered thousands of times without you being in the room.

People research you before they contact you

One of the biggest mistakes founders make is assuming that their first conversation with a potential client happens on a call. In reality, the conversation often starts much earlier. Someone may have already searched your name, looked at your profile, read your posts, checked your experience, and formed an opinion about you before you ever speak.

I see this constantly with founders and CEOs. People want to know who is behind the company, especially when they are considering a significant investment or a high value business relationship. Your LinkedIn profile gives them an opportunity to build familiarity with you before they ever send that first message.

That means your profile needs to answer the questions people are already asking. Who are you? What do you do? Who do you help? Why should they trust you? If those answers are unclear, you may be losing opportunities without ever knowing they existed.

Your LinkedIn Profile Is Your New Business Card

Your profile is more than an online résumé

I still see many professionals treating LinkedIn as a digital version of their CV. They list their job titles, companies, responsibilities, and education, but they don’t explain the value they create today. For someone who is trying to build a business or personal brand, that approach leaves a huge amount of potential untapped.

Your LinkedIn profile should work more like a landing page for your reputation. Your headline should communicate your positioning, your banner should reinforce your message, your About section should tell your story, and your featured section should give people proof of your expertise.

When all of those elements work together, your profile becomes much more powerful. Instead of simply telling people where you’ve worked, it gives them a reason to remember you and continue the relationship.

Your content makes your business card even stronger

The biggest advantage of LinkedIn compared with a traditional business card is that your profile can demonstrate your expertise. Someone can discover your profile today and immediately see how you think through your articles, videos, comments, and posts.

This is why I always tell founders that content and profile optimization need to work together. Your content creates visibility and curiosity, while your profile gives people the information they need to decide whether they trust you.

Imagine meeting someone at an event and handing them a business card that automatically updates every week with your latest ideas, achievements, interviews, and insights. That is essentially what a strong LinkedIn presence can do for you.

Your personal brand travels with you

Another reason I consider LinkedIn a new business card is that your personal brand isn’t limited to your current company. Companies change, businesses grow, people move into new industries, and founders launch new ventures.

Your reputation stays with you.

If you consistently build authority around your name, you create an asset that can support every future business you build. Whether you become an investor, launch another company, join a board, or start speaking at events, the reputation you’ve built online continues working in your favor.

This is why I encourage founders to start building their personal brand before they think they need it. The best time to build trust is before you need someone to trust you.

Your LinkedIn profile can open doors while you are offline

One of the things I love most about personal branding is the leverage it creates. You don’t have to personally introduce yourself to every potential client, investor, partner, or journalist. Your profile can do part of that work for you.

When someone searches your name at midnight, they can still discover your expertise. When a potential client receives your name from a recommendation, they can immediately investigate your background. When someone sees your comment on another founder’s post, they can click through and learn more about you.

Your LinkedIn profile is therefore not just a place where people find your contact information. It is a place where your reputation continues working even when you are not actively networking.
