You might have noticed it too: networking isn’t just about shaking hands at conferences anymore. Online visibility is quietly taking over but don’t get me wrong, it’s not replacing in-person networking, It’s giving it a little superpower instead.

I see this all the time with my clients. They’ll say, “I’m going to this huge industry event in the USA,” or, “I need to meet more people in my field.” And here’s the fun part: some of them are already networking online before the event even starts. By the time they walk into the room, people already know them, recognize their work, and maybe even follow their posts.

Take one of our Digital Business College members as an example, a guy from Mexico in a very technical field. He doesn’t show up to conferences “blindly.” He uses LinkedIn to connect with people ahead of time, comments on posts, shares his thoughts, and reaches out to speakers. By the time he meets them in person, they already know him.

Building Relationships Before the Conference

Here’s my main tip: start online first. Don’t wait for the event to begin. Find the people you want to connect with, engage with their content, and start building trust.

Traditional networking can feel stressful, but when people already know you online, the in-person conversation becomes smooth, easy, and even fun. No more awkward “Hi, I’m…” moments that make you wish the floor would swallow you whole. A little online work beforehand makes the real-life meetings feel natural and enjoyable.

Online Visibility Doesn’t Replace Networking – it Enhances It

The truth is, online visibility isn’t here to replace in-person networking – it’s here to make it better. Think of it as warming up your audience. People already know your style, your expertise, and your ideas. This builds trust and saves a ton of time.

Personally, I love this approach. It makes networking way less stressful. You don’t have to explain your background in three minutes or hope they remember your name. You’ve already done the work online, so the face-to-face conversation happens naturally.

Using LinkedIn to Make Strategic Connections

LinkedIn is a super powerful tool for this. But the trick is to connect with the right people and not just anyone. Share your knowledge, post tips, small insights, or case studies. People notice when someone actually knows their stuff.

And remember, one post won’t cut it. You need to show up regularly so people recognize your name, your ideas, and your value. By doing this, you’re not just networking, you’re showing that you’re someone reliable.

Real Results From My Clients

I’ve seen this work so many times. One software engineer connected with several speakers on LinkedIn weeks before a tech expo. When he arrived, those speakers remembered him, introduced him to others, and even invited him to collaborate on a small project. Another client, a marketing consultant, built her LinkedIn presence by sharing case studies consistently. By the time she attended a conference, people already knew her work and approached her directly.

That’s the power of online visibility and it feels amazing!

So yes, let’s say that online visibility isn’t replacing traditional networking but it’s making it easier, more fun, and way less awkward. By the time you meet people in real life, they already know you, like your content, and might even be secretly impressed by your LinkedIn game.
